Research at the Frontier of AI

We conduct original research to build AI systems that are safe, capable, and genuinely aligned with human values. Our work spans alignment, reasoning, multimodal intelligence, and privacy-preserving methods, all driven by a commitment to making AI that people can actually trust.

What We Work On

🎯 Alignment and Safety

We work to understand the risks of AI systems and develop techniques to ensure our models remain helpful, honest, and harmless. Our goal is to build AI that reliably does what users intend while avoiding unintended harmful behaviors, especially as models become more capable over time.

🧠 Reasoning and Intelligence

We research methods to improve how AI systems reason through complex, multi-step problems. This includes chain-of-thought processes, logical analysis, and structured problem decomposition that allows models to show their work transparently and arrive at better answers.

🌐 Multimodal Systems

We develop AI that can seamlessly understand and generate across multiple modalities including text, images, audio, and video. Our research focuses on building unified systems that perceive and interact with the world in a richer, more human-like way.

🔒 Privacy-Preserving AI

We pioneer techniques that deliver powerful AI capabilities while protecting user privacy at every level. This includes research into how to build systems that learn and improve over time without storing or exploiting sensitive user data.

Efficient Inference

Speed and accessibility matter for real-world AI applications. We research optimization techniques that allow our models to respond quickly, run efficiently on available hardware, and remain practically usable without sacrificing capability or quality.

🤝 Human and AI Collaboration

We study how AI can best augment human capabilities rather than replace human judgment. Our research focuses on building systems that enhance human creativity, accelerate research, and support better decision-making through thoughtful and transparent collaboration.

What We Are Thinking About

While formal publications are in preparation, these are the core questions our research team is actively working through. They represent the intellectual foundation of everything we build at CoreMind Labs.

Why AI Safety and AI Capability Are Not in Conflict

A common misconception in the field is that making an AI safer necessarily makes it less capable. We believe the opposite. A model that reliably understands user intent, refuses harmful requests, and communicates uncertainty clearly is more useful, not less. Our research is focused on proving this empirically through the behavior of our deployed models.

Canadian Data Sovereignty as a First-Class AI Design Principle

Most AI research treats privacy as a constraint to work around. We treat it as a design goal to optimize for. Building CoreMind entirely on Canadian infrastructure was not a business decision. It was a research commitment. This perspective shapes every architectural choice we make, from model training to inference to memory storage.

Transparent Reasoning as a Trust Mechanism in Large Language Models

When an AI shows its reasoning, users can verify it, challenge it, and learn from it. CoreMind's visible chain-of-thought is not just a feature. It is a research hypothesis: that transparent reasoning builds more durable user trust than confident answers alone, and that trust leads to more productive human and AI collaboration over time.

Toward Unified Perception: Lessons from Building a Multimodal Canadian AI

Building an AI that handles text, voice, and images on a single unified platform taught us a great deal about how different modalities interact and where they conflict. This piece explores the key design decisions we made building CoreMind's multimodal pipeline and what we learned from each one, including the tradeoffs we would make differently today.

Our research team is actively working on several papers covering AI safety, transparent reasoning, and privacy-preserving methods. We plan to share our first formal publications with the broader research community later in 2026. Enter your email below to be notified when we publish.

How We Approach Research

At CoreMind Labs, we believe that building powerful AI and building safe AI are not opposing goals. They are deeply intertwined. The most capable AI systems in the long run will be exactly those that humans can trust, verify, and rely on to behave consistently.

We take an empirical, iterative approach to research. We build systems, study their behaviors carefully, identify where they fall short of our expectations, and refine our methods. This cycle of building and learning drives progress toward AI that genuinely benefits the people who use it.

We also believe that publishing what we learn, even when it is uncomfortable, makes the entire field better. AI safety is not a competitive advantage to be hoarded. It is a shared responsibility that every organization building AI systems owes to the people those systems affect.

1

Safety as a Foundation

Safety is not an afterthought or a feature. It is built into every design decision from the beginning of every project.

2

Privacy by Design

User data protection is a core architectural principle, not something added at the end to satisfy compliance requirements.

3

Human-Centered Development

AI should amplify human potential and support human judgment, not diminish human agency or make decisions people should make for themselves.

4

Transparent Progress

We share our learnings openly with the research community, including findings that challenge our own assumptions or show us where we were wrong.

5

Canadian Responsibility

As a Canadian AI lab, we have a responsibility to advance AI development that reflects Canadian values around privacy, fairness, and public interest.

Our Commitments

What We Stand For

📚

Open Publication

We commit to publishing our research findings in peer-reviewed venues and sharing them freely with the research community, regardless of outcome.

🇨🇦

Canadian Sovereignty

All research infrastructure, model training, and data processing remains on Canadian soil under Canadian jurisdiction. This is a permanent commitment, not a phase.

🕵

Responsible Disclosure

When our research uncovers risks or vulnerabilities in AI systems, we disclose them responsibly and work to address them before they can cause harm.
